Capital of Morocco's North, Tetouan is a welcoming city and blend of cultures
and colors set before the shores of the Mediterranean.
Tetouan is a meeting place of intellectual, cultural
and artistic life harking from many traditions the
blending of which has marked the social identify
of the city. The cultural contribution of the medina of
Tetouan is a fundamental feature of the city. It is about
a spirit resulting from five centuries of history.
It easy to get to the medina through Bab Okla to visit
the SKALA ethnographic museum or for a stroll in
Souika, where General Franco lived when he stayed in
Tetouan. This district is the home of the Lalla Fariya
mosque built in 1170.
Built in the 18th century in times of Moulay Ismaïl, the
Khalifa palace is one of the models of the Alaouite
dynasty.
Enter the patio and revel at the scent of jasmine
flowers, listen to the song of the fountain, enjoy the
tranquility before going to the El Fouki suk where
people in white djellabas or western dress, mountain
dwellers in gray burnouses, peasant women in red and
white striped "mendils", let themselves be enticed by a
thousand and one delights in the shops.
A charming little square with a few
admire the traditional garb on
pottery.
Just a few feet away, the jewelers'
countless handicrafts items.
In the medina of Tetouan, Guelsa El Kébira is the realm
of materials, cloth and garments.
The sparkling, plain, luxurious and embroidered cloth
are genuine marvels to behold.
The colors and materials seem to stand out in a
countless array. Right in front of your eyes a living
stage.
In the middle of the square, women of the Rif clad in
their traditional costumes remain seated behind stands
brimming over with red, white and blue striped
materials..
Mosques and Zaouias are very
important in the daily life of
Tetouan, like the «Jamaa Al Kebir»
mosque built by Sultan Moulay
Slimane in the 18th century.
Tetouan is a city of saints and
zaouias like those of Sidi Ali Ben
Raisoun and Sidi Ali Baraka.
