Suks or markets are prevalent all around Tangier. Almost every part of town has one. Everything imaginable can be found there: food products, electronics, handicrafts, clothing, etc. A few suks to visit:
The Grand Socco :
In this covered suk, one can find just about anything. It is the home of a fruit and vegetable market, a butcher's section, tripe vendors, a fish market, the bazaar with shops piled high with all sorts of goods (food items, home appliances, electronic items, etc....). Grocers sell basic foodstuffs (milk, sugar, eggs)
cumin, curry, paprika, coriander, saffron and other condiments. At the olive market, the merchants display their goods in trays brimming galore with black, brown, spiced and aromatic-flavored olives. Genuine exoticism guaranteed!
Casabarata Market : A genuine cavern of Ali Baba, Casabarata displays all
sorts of goods and merchandise. Most sought after
items: juice, home appliances, satellite receivers and
all kinds of canned products and preserves from
mortadella to tuna fish, dairy products, cheese, shelf
stable yogurt, pasteurized milk, etc. In the scrap metal
market maybe some part you need can be uncovered.
A few quality second hand dealers are set up in the
Rue de Hollande and in the Medina and two or three
antiquarians have shops on Boulevard Mohammed V,
Rue de la Liberté and Rue des Almohades.
Fondouk Chejra : Set up in the old caravansary, this suk on the first floor
is home to weavers' workshops. They are specialized
in red and white striped cotton goods of the Rif worn
by the peasant women of the Jebala.
